Sarah Canning is a North Vancouver based counsellor and art therapist who works with adults, youth and children.

I believe the foundation of counselling is a strong therapeutic relationship between therapist and client. Therapy is a safe space for you to be seen and heard without judgment. I meet people where they are at and truly believe you are the expert of your own journey. My role is to collaborate with you along your journey and help you to explore, express and learn about yourself and how to move forward in your life.

Many people find their way to counselling because they feel stuck or up against barriers that are holding them back from the life they want to live.  I work with people to help them become “unstuck” and use a holistic approach to look at the different aspects of your life and support your increased wellbeing. Together we will build on the strengths you already have, nurture challenges and help you achieve your goals.

Working Together
Areas of Practice

I work with children, youth, and adults who are struggling with a variety of challenges.

  • Anxiety and Stress management

  • Depression

  • Self esteem & Identity

  • Finding meaning

  • Emotional regulation

  • Addiction

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Life transitions and change

  • Multicultural challenges

  • Creative blocks

  • Family challenges

  • Motivation and goal setting

Each person is unique and therefore I tailor my sessions to meet the needs of the individual. I use an integrative approach that may include cognitive-behavioural therapy, existential therapy, mindfulness, expressive therapies, narrative therapy and strengths based approaches. All of my work is informed by anti-oppression and social justice frameworks.

Therapy can help individuals to increase self awareness, insight, self esteem and positive coping strategies. I believe that people have an inner wisdom and my role is to help bring forward those insights, so you can find your path.

People have an incredible ability to change and grow; let this be your step toward healing.

Fees

Employee and Family Assistance Programs:

Many extended health benefits will cover the cost of a Registered Clinical Counsellor. Please check with your benefit administrator to find out your coverage.

Autism Funding Unit:

Counselling is often covered under Autism funding. Families using funding to cover the cost of therapy sessions must fill out forms from the Autism Funding Unit in order for payment to be sent directly to the therapist. Please feel free to ask me about further details.

Coverage

Following the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors guidelines, therapy session rates are as follows:

•    $120 per 50 minute session.

•    $185 per 90 minute session.

Longer sessions can be beneficial if more than one person is attending the session and/or if art making is a significant part of your process.

I am a strong believer that everyone should be able to access counselling for his or her own wellbeing. Because of this, I do offer a limited number of sliding scale options for people when payment is a barrier to seeking counselling. Please contact me for further details.

*Please note that 24 hour cancellation is required, or the full session fee will be charged.

As everyone is unique, different counsellors and approaches will work for different people. Finding a counsellor that is the right fit for you is very important. I offer a free 15 minute phone consultation before booking an appointment with me to allow you a chance to ask questions and get a sense of who I am.
